Sometimes there isn’t any more…

Sometimes there isn’t any more…it gets all used up!

Some things last forever and if I sit here and think what is that thing that lasts forever, I frown because I was about to say my engagement ring.  Diamonds are forever that’s what all jewelry adverts say!  But then I remember my real diamond engagement ring that I got from hubby is gone.  I lost it years ago and that caused such drama, I was so scared of telling him I knew he had pawned his dad’s signet ring so that he could buy me that beautiful ring.  So for sure diamonds are not forever.

Then I think maybe it’s my car or house that lasts forever but even that could be stolen or burned down and gone in moment.

What about photos? Don’t they say that ‘memories are forever! print your memories here’ ?  Well the old system of printing photos was taken over by digital photography and as we all know the old photos lose their color after some years and start looking a bit washed out.
What about the digital ones?
I have lost so many, that’s so easy when your computer is corrupt or has a virus.  Or a camera is stolen with the latest Christmas photos on it gone forever not even a chance to download!

Nothing lasts forever not even hard material things, they get replaced by something bigger, better and faster all the time.  There is one thing though, only one thing that I think lasts forever, that thing is love.
I know I loved other people and then stopped loving them and it’s a life cycle and part of growing up, but do you ever stop loving your children?  That is what I’m talking about that kind of love not some old school friend or boyfriend thing.

Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away never to return.
So while we have it, it's best we love it and care for it and fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick.
This is true for marriage and old cars and children with bad report cards and dogs with bad hips and aging parents and grandparents.
We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.
Some things we keep.
There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special and so, we keep them close!
But even those special people get used up sometimes and go away and then there isn’t any more…
And when my father died, on a warm December night in a cold hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more…
Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away never to return.  So while we have it, it's best we love it and care for it.

He has been on mind a lot lately, still miss my dad and love him

  1. Beautiful and true words! Our uncle is dearly missed, for many reasons. He made the best braai's, could fix anything that was broken or needed to be modified, always had time for his grandchildren, drove my aunt and cousins around for years, until they finally all got their licences, and told my husband many many stories of his adventures of his days growning up in Angola. We miss you tio and your happy disposition
